HP: various by annakovsky

Then she made me laugh 'til I cried with Harry Potter and the Problem with Polyjuice and its sequel Harry Potter and the Ruthless Ravenclaws, in which Harry and Ron...deal.
Seriously, y'all. Encourage this woman to write more HP fic, STAT.

I really don't like pregnancy or babyfic normally, but
teaspoon14's Good Enough is not about happy baby-making domesticity. It's about Ron and his relationship with his family: chosen and not. It's about the consequences of a relationship with his two best friends, and what it means to be the sixth child of a mother like Molly Weasley.
Triquetra is a short take on the protection-spell-brings-them-closer-together plot, but it's beautifully done and makes the right choice to sidestep explicit smut.

I don't think I clicked with Room Serviced by
pir8fancier the first time I read it -- something about the style was a bit off-putting, perhaps. And yet I keep coming back to it. It's still one of the better written Draco/Hermione stories out there, and it's set during wartime, which I love, and it remembers Ron, which I love even more. On the last readthrough I realized that yes, I do like this story very much. And it's got an ending that always stays with me for a while after.

There is an amusingly detached sort of disregard for authority figures and normative conventions in
srichard's Skin Against Skin. Although it doesn't really get into the trio's heads as they start exploring the sexual aspects to their relationship, that's fine. It's much more about the reactions of the Weasleys, and how those show up what an exclusive, unexplainable bond Harry, Ron and Hermione have with each other.

Third Wheel by switchknife is a Harry/Ron (with some Harry/Ron/Hermione) from Ron's perspective which is excellently, devastatingly done. It's a short future fic in which Harry and Ron have just lost Hermione, and all they have left is each other.
Last time around I recommended Helen's Close Enough (Harry/Ron). Now I want to point out a couple of her LJ-only snippets: things she hadn’t ever known to ask for a harshly-realized Trio ficlet set during the war, and Do Better, a Draco/Ron set at Hogwarts. Helen's writing is so...visceral, from the choppy dialogue to the descriptions that hit you like a fist to the stomach, and her Ron characterization is always so much darker and more complex than the usual crap fandom tosses him.
HP: Close Enough by Helen (Harry/Ron)
Mar. 22nd, 2004 01:17 amA story that's been making the rounds is Close Enough by Helen. Harry/Ron, with the two characters about as fucked up as they ought to be after being forced into war as teenagers. I found the memories and flashbacks fascinating, and the relationships between the various principle characters added poignancy to the one in the foreground.
The hottest thing I've read in HP lately is Bed and Board by Resonant. Trio smut. Room of Requirement. Resonant. What more do you need? But also, there's a clever backstory in which the rest of the wizarding world succumbs to a particular brand of insanity, which kicks everything else into much-more-than-PWP territory.
nightfalltwen wrote The Very Best Tree for the Dear Santa challenge, a bit of Christmas-themed Triosmut that I recommend to you simply because it makes me happy.

HP: A Sweet Reversion by Amy (Ron/Draco)
Jan. 2nd, 2004 12:44 amA Sweet Reversion by Amy is very clever. It is really an unbelievable treat to find clever HP stories, stories that show the author can shake out interesting things from the Potterverse just as well as J.K. Rowling herself. In this one, Ron drinks a potion which Hermione means for Harry, and then gets himself into a little trouble with Draco. I was pleasantly surprised at how hot their encounters were -- but then, smart is sexy.
Come Together is a post-war story in which the Trio finds their way back to each other after nursing some wounds apart. It neatly sidesteps all of the usual future fic cliches, and while it edges close to melodrama sometimes, it's still an incredibly satisfying read. (Except there's also enough sexual tension in it to power a fucking New York City borough. Definitely one of those stories where you want to stalk the author to writewritewrite faster please!) Granger's Hermione is a little more unsure of herself than I see the character being, especially after having already been through so much, but the secret romantic in me is actually quite pleased with the way her relationship with Harry is playing out. And Ron, oh, I do believe this is one of the loveliest Rons in fanfic.
Space Oddity by Dale Edmonds is unlike any other Harry Potter fanfic I've ever read. I think I could tiptoe through its many layers until the sky falls down, but I'd still keep finding new things, like hidden caverns, with fearsome creatures slithering behind glittering piles of jewels. It's one of the saddest stories I've ever read, as well.
Castling and Heart Stopped Breathing by Durendal. These two Ron stories are well-crafted, atmospheric, and sort of spooky. (sigh) Good Harry Potter fic just makes me so happy.
ETA: As of January 2012, I can't find these stories on the Internet. Links help would be appreciated!
I liked a quasi-series by VoxMaille, consisting of two stories and a collection of scenes that fill in the blanks. First read The Only Thing We Have To Fear, which gives a far more plausible explanation of Hermione's greatest fear than Prisoner of Azkaban. Then read That Something Else Is More Important, which is an ambitious and highly interesting study of the trio and heroism. The missing scenes are all in As We Are, and include some poignant, spot-on portraits of the Weasleys.
Benedictio Amicorum by Mosylu takes place at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It's a nice exploration of the Ron/Hermione/Harry friendship, and has a very Rowling-ish characterization of Dumbledore. Mosylu also has a post-Hogwarts fic called Home for Christmas, which falters at the end but still provides a believable glimpse of Harry searching for a renewal of purpose.
Arabella's Not as a Last Resort and its sequel Getting the Point are Ron/Hermione during their fifth year -- but in a completely non-squicky and wonderful way. Same goes for Zsenya's A Muggle Summer and its sequel At Diagon Alley. These four stories made me all nostalgic for age fifteen, which is a pretty impressive feat. (g) Both authors are currently co-writing After the End with the Sugar Quill Gang, which looks to be very near completion. It's a long, careful story about how the main trio, Remus, Sirius, and a surprisingly believable Ginny Weasley struggle to make something of their lives post-Hogwarts and post-Voldemort. Also, if you have time, Arabella's Hermione, Queen of Witches series offers the events of all four books from the perspective of Hermione's journal, filling in blanks and generally nailing the character's voice.
