There's a sort of house style in BSG fanfic already, all present tense minimalism with certain lines (over-)calculated for dramatic punch, and it doesn't always work for me. But [livejournal.com profile] svilleficrecs makes it work in Intra, which fills in some backstory for "33." The prose is unadorned, a bit rough at times, but the story takes a good long look at the characters and their memories of the time before in the midst of the hell they're currently going through.

[livejournal.com profile] sangga's Supply and Demand is a quiet, gorgeous slice of life. It's three parts -- the link only goes to the first one, so use the little green arrows or the "next entry" link to get through the whole thing. It's the kind of story you read and think, "Yeah, that's what it's really like inside people's heads, when they're not acting like heroes, when they're just trying to deal with things." Actually, that sums it up about right: I think of it as a story about trying.

Feeding my love of pre-series Kara fic is [livejournal.com profile] stars_like_dust's All Feelings But This One. This is a much deeper exploration of Kara's relationship with Zak than I've seen done, and it's totally plausible as backstory. Things do get that much more interesting when Lee enters the story, but Zak is so well-drawn here that I really wanted to know more about him. And Kara, as well -- even though the story is told from her perspective, there's a certain emotional distance in the narrative which is quite tantalizing even as it feels like the right thing for her character.

I've found that I really like Kara fic set pre-series. [livejournal.com profile] brynnmck already wowed me with Laws of Gravity (link goes to rec), and now she's done it again with Detour. This one isn't as big in scope as the other, but it packs a lot of characterization into the story. The dialogue crackles, the sexual tension is...HOT, and it just generally inspires a lot of love.

[livejournal.com profile] brynnmck also posted two other stories along with this one, just prior to the S2 premiere: Remedy (much angstier reunion fic) and Bottom of a Well (non-angsty sweet S1 fic).

[livejournal.com profile] rheanna27's Twelve is the only really long story I've seen in BSG. It's full of some extremely interesting speculation on the Cylons/human relationship -- but to say more would be to spoil. The story didn't quite click with me on an emotional level, but considering it's Rheanna, I think that's more of a Scorsese effect (you know, like comparing The Aviator to Taxi Driver or Raging Bull *grin*).

I also liked Five Deaths, a Roslin-centric series of short what-ifs in the "Five Things That Never Happened To..." format, because it's a skillful experimentation with the character under different lights.

[livejournal.com profile] brynnmck's Laws of Gravity (and part two) is my pre-series canon until the show itself tells us different. And even then, it's so good that I'll most likely wish the show went there. The characterizations of the three major characters are excellent, Lee especially, and after just one season the author has a seriously good handle on Kara's issues. Really very well done.

Trying to break up the HP monopoly, because I do actually have a shiny new fandom: Battlestar Galactica -- the remake.

The first story I read in BSG was [livejournal.com profile] anr's Stimmed, set during/after "33." It's got a sharp, minimalist style befitting Kara's state of mind while on stims, but isn't quite as minimalist as a lot of the fandom's writers seem to be. Anyway, for being the first story I read in the fandom, it's held its own. Although this depiction of Kara gives me a sort of young heroin-chic rock star impression, I do like it a lot.
